New LIPA Plan Would Reimburse Long Islanders For Blackouts

The proposal could see residents getting money back for lost food and medication.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A new policy under consideration by the Long Island Power Authority could reimburse customers for losses suffered during power outages.

The proposal, as reported in Newsday, would reimburse customers up to $25 a day after a blackout of three days or more, as well as up to $235 for spoiled food. Customers could receive more if they have receipts that show the price of items. The proposal would also cover the cost of spoiled medication due to loss of refrigeration, as well as compensation for businesses.

The proposal will be discussed at LIPA's Dec. 14 board meeting. If approved, it would go into effect in January.
