We all know athletes who shine whether they're competing or not. Let's help share these amazing stories!

(Jennifer Cook)

MASSAPEQUA, NY — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from Jennifer Cook who nominated her son Justin of Massapequa.

What sport does the star student athlete play?

Baseball

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

Justin has battled weight issues since he was a kid. He always wanted to play baseball and joined the team every spring. He was benched more than he played most of the time. He was usually last in the batting order. He could have given up so many times but he kept showing up. He joined a travel team in meddle school and began waking up at 4:30 a.m. every day before school and doing cardio. He began eating healthier and focusing on taking care of his body. Justin lost over 40 pounds in less than a year. He also was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and was placed in a brace for 18 hours a day to stop his spine from curing even further. This issues has affected his ability to throw. He committed to a goal as a pitcher on his travel baseball team. He started as a first baseman and relief pitcher. His positive attitude and resilience helped him keep pushing. He supports everyone on his team and always has a smile. He has now earned a place as starting pitcher for his team. We are so proud of his determination, positive outlook and kind heart. He maintains high honor roll every quarter in school while doing volunteer work raising money for animal shelters and the local food pantry.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

Justin is the most kind and caring young man. He has been through a lot for a kid his age but still manages to be positive and optimistic.

Keep up the great work, Justin!
