All 11 Patchogue-Medford Schools in Good Standing

South Ocean Middle School Added to New York State Education Department's Highest Designation

MEDFORD, NEW YORK (MARCH 2023) — The New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently removed Patchogue-Medford Union Free School District’s South Ocean Middle School from the department’s “target” list and redesignated it as a school in good standing. As a result, all 11 schools in the District are now identified as schools in good standing, the highest level of accountability standing in NYSED’s rating system.

“This is a momentous milestone for our District, our students and our community,” said Patchogue-Medford Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Donna Jones. “We could not have accomplished this achievement without the tremendous and dedicated work of our administrators, teachers, students, parents and guardians, community members and, of course, the support and trust of our Board of Education.”

According to NYSED’s website, district and school accountability designations are determined using scores for all students and student subgroups, such as students with disabilities, racial and ethnic groups, low-income students and English language learners. These scores are calculated through an array of indicators, including student academic achievement, student growth and school progress, absentee rates, progress of English language learners, high school graduation rates and preparation of students for college, careers and civic engagement. The resulting designation classifications are targeted support and improvement (TSI), comprehensive support and improvement (CSI) and good standing.

The Patchogue-Medford School District had three schools in good standing during the evaluation of the 2020-2021 school year. The 2021-2022 school year, however, proved transformational for the District, with the District’s other eight schools being reclassified as in good standing, establishing this high honor for every school in the district.

“Through this tremendous achievement, we have demonstrated what we are capable of through collaboration, hard work and dedicated improvements,” said Dr. Jones. “However, our work is never done as we continue to enhance the education, support and programs we provide our students. We are committed to providing the highest quality education to all our students. As I have often said, ‘all means all,’ and in our district, we are effectively addressing the needs of ALL of our students with compassion, understanding, and equity.”
