Cub Scout Pack 47 of Pat-Med Spends the Night at the USS Intrepid!
Scouts tour the Flight Deck, USS Growler, and Space Shuttle Pavilion during an overnight adventure.
New York, NY – Cub Scout Pack 47 of Patchogue Medford recently had a once-in-a-lifetime experience, spending the night aboard the USS Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The scouts explored the historic aircraft carrier, learned about its important role in American history, and got a behind-the-scenes look at some of its most famous exhibits.
The adventure started on the Flight Deck, where the scouts checked out restored fighter jets and helicopters. Standing on the deck with views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline, the scouts learned about how pilots launched from the Intrepid during World War II and the Cold War.
Next, the scouts toured the USS Growler, a Cold War-era guided missile submarine. They got to see what life was like for the sailors who lived and worked in its narrow, cramped spaces. During the tour, they learned about the Growler’s secret missions and the crucial role it played in national defense.
Later that night, the scouts visited the Space Shuttle Pavilion, home to the Space Shuttle Enterprise, NASA’s first-ever orbiter. They discovered how the shuttle helped pave the way for future space missions and met the challenges of early space exploration.
The scouts also enjoyed 4D movies that brought the history of the Intrepid to life. The films showed how the ship served in some of the most important events of the 20th century, from battles in World War II to scientific research missions in later years.
At the end of the night, the scouts got ready to sleep in the museum. Resting in the same spaces where sailors once slept, they reflected on the lessons they had learned about teamwork, service, and leadership.
“This was an incredible experience,” said one of the troop leaders. “It gave the scouts a real connection to history and inspired them to think about how they can make a difference in their own communities.”
Pack 47 would like to thank the USS Intrepid Museum staff for providing such an amazing opportunity. Trips like this are an important part of scouting, helping to build leadership skills and a passion for learning.
