Cub Scouts Place Flags at Calverton National Cemetery for Memorial Day
Cub Scout Pack 47 alongside other Scouting Units Honor Veterans with Flag Placement Ceremony at Calverton National Cemetery
On the morning of May 24th 2025, Cub Scouts from Pack 47, joined by Scouts from Troop 47 and units from across Long Island, gathered at Calverton National Cemetery to take part in a deeply meaningful tradition: placing American flags at the grave sites of our nation’s fallen service members.
This annual event, known as the “Flag Placement,” has its roots in a tradition that dates back more than 150 years. After the Civil War, communities across the country began decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags as a way to honor their sacrifice.
At national cemeteries like Calverton, Scouts and volunteers continue this legacy of remembrance by placing small American flags in front of each headstone, ensuring that no hero is forgotten. It’s a humbling sight: rows upon rows of white markers, each graced with a flag and a moment of reflection.

For our Scouts, this isn’t just another activity—it’s an opportunity to connect with the meaning of citizenship, community service, and national pride. Walking through the cemetery, they see the names, the ranks, the wars served— and they begin to understand the cost of freedom in a very personal way.
“We’re proud of our Scouts for showing up early, in uniform, ready to serve,” said one Scout leader. “This tradition helps them understand that Memorial Day is not just a day off from school. It’s a day to honor real people who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

In a world that often moves too fast, moments like these remind us to pause, reflect, and give thanks. Through service and remembrance, our young Scouts are learning to carry forward a tradition of honor—one flag at a time.
