Incumbent Republican Assemb. Doug Smith will be challenged by Democrat Michael Reynolds in the 5th Assembly District.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Voters in New York's 5th Assembly District will see an incumbent challenged as they head to the polls on Nov. 5.
The candidates:
- Doug Smith (Republican, Conservative)
- Michael Reynolds (Democrat)
Incumbent Doug Smith, of Holbrook, has served in the assembly since 2019. In 2022's election, he garnered 67 percent of the vote in his district.

Smith did not respond to Patch's questionnaire.
He will face Democrat Michael Reynolds, of Lake Ronkonkoma, in the election. Reynolds, a political newcomer, works in the private sector as a vice president of operations.

The 5th Assembly District stretches from Islandia, Lake Ronkonkoma, and Lake Grove in the west to the Selden and Farmingville area in the east, and includes a portion of North Patchogue.
