Looking To 'Cut' Down Childhood Cancer; Charity Event Receives $67K

BELLMORE, NY — An annual fundraiser by Mepham High School netted more than $67,000 from the Chop Your Locks event.

It benefits the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which supports pediatric cancer research and outreach.

"We couldn’t be prouder of the efforts of our seniors in Participation in Government
to coordinate this event and to inspire their classmates and community members to come
together for such an incredible cause," Kathy Dennis, event co-organizer and social studies teacher, said.

Mepham senior Thor Bjornsson was the evening’s top fundraiser, earning $4,300 for
the foundation.

The event, now in its 13th year, inspires students from throughout the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District.

It was the second year of resuming haircutting in person since the pandemic halted large-scale plans.
