NORTH MERRICK, NY. — New York State Senator Steve Rhoads partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island to hold a Halloween costume drive this month, organized in partnership with Danny Donohue and Emma Stein, a pair of interns in Rhoads’ office.

The drive brought new and gently used Halloween costumes to children on Long Island who wouldn’t have otherwise been able to dress up. Rhoads’ office said the drive generated hundreds of costumes for kids in need at donation sites in the Bellmore, North Merrick, Levittown and Wantagh public libraries.

“Part of our Senate intern experience is working on a 'community impact project' that these students organize from start to finish under my guidance. It provides these emerging leaders the chance to grow while reemphasizing that apart from trying to reshape state government to protect the interests of our communities up in Albany, our main objective is to serve the people we're privileged to represent,” Rhoads said.

He added: “Emma Stein and Danny Donahue teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island to create our Halloween Costume Drive and now, their talent, combined with the overwhelming generosity of our community, will provide hundreds of children across Long Island costumes and accessories for a safe and spooky Halloween.”

According to Lisa Mitnick, director of partnership development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, the drive was a success in support not only of community members who needed it, but the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well.

"We're grateful to Senator Rhoads and his team for organizing the Costume Clothing Drive in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island,” Mitnick said. “Their continued partnership helps us provide the resources needed to make a real difference in the lives of local children. We appreciate their commitment to our mission and the community."

For Rhoads, the drive was also a valuable opportunity to show a pair of younger members of his office what’s possible in offices like his, even for interns.

“This event highlights the power of community and the impact our young leaders can have,” said Senator Rhoads. “Emma and Danny’s hard work and creativity made this year’s drive a huge success, and I’m so grateful to everyone who helped bring joy to children this Halloween.”
