"A Secure Lockout protocol is used to secure buildings and grounds during incidents that may pose an imminent concern outside the school," the Newburgh Enlarged City School District wrote in a letter to families Thursday morning. "Students who are outside return to the inside of the building. External doors are secured. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during this protocol."
The school district announced plans to offer support for students and staff members.
"The loss of a child of any age can be challenging to understand and process. Our hearts break for this child's family and those who knew and loved them," Superintendent Manning Campbell said. "Scholars, faculty, and staff alike may experience grief as a result of the untimely passing of a child, simply by learning of the loss, regardless of their relationship with the student. This type of news can reignite trauma and grief from previous experiences as well."
The district said it has activated its Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team to support the school community. The CISM team is a group of NECSD professionals (school psychologists, counselors, and social workers) trained to help mitigate the impact of a stressful event, support the recovery process, and assess the need for additional support.
"We know that our parents, faculty, and staff may struggle to learn about a child's passing," Campbell told families and staff. "Please check in on each other and utilize the resources available to process your grief. It is important to take time to take care of yourself before you are properly able to take care of others."
No other information about the victim or the shooting is being released at this time, police said.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the City of Newburgh Police Department Detective Division at 845-569-7519. All calls may remain anonymous, according to police.
