14-Year-Old Arrested After Shooting Himself In Groin: Police

After an investigation into the incident, he was arrested and charged with felony weapons possession, according to City of Newburgh police.

CITY OF NEWBURGH, NY — The City of Newburgh Police Department says that they made an arrest in a self-shooting incident that took place earlier this year.

On Jan. 27, around 3 p.m., officers responded to Robinson Ave. and South St. after receiving a report of shots fired.

Once on the scene, they found a 14-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his groin, along with evidence of a shooting, including two 9-millimeter shell casings.

Officers immediately began life-saving measures on the teen, and he was taken to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, and then later taken to Westchester Medical Center.

The Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force took over the case. During the course of their investigation, the victim, who is a student in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, was interviewed and gave contradictory accounts about what happened, according to detectives.

Police concluded that the gunshot was self-inflicted.

On Feb. 17, the 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with felony weapons possession.

The case was investigated by Detective Edgar and Detective Salazar, with help from the Orange County District Attorney's Office Investigators.
