Biochemists And Biophysicists Among Hudson Valley's Top Trending Job Titles

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Biochemists and biophysicists were ranked No. 4 on the state Department of Labor's recently released list of the Hudson Valley's Top Five Trending Jobs for 2017, coming in just a tad behind accountants and auditors at No. 3, then by registered nurses at No. 2 and physical therapists at No. 1.
With an above-average wage of $73,260 and a high likelihood of continued growth in the Hudson Valley through the end of 2017, biochemists and biophysicists were determined to be the fourth-highest top trending job title as a result of survey data analysis and regional need projections performed by labor market experts.
Additionally, the nationwide demand for biochemistry and biophysics professionals will have increased by about 8 percent between 2014 and 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The BLS says there are entry-level biochemistry and biophysics positions available for those who hold bachelor's and master's degrees, but a doctoral degree is required for a biochemist or biophysicist to work in independent research and development. Most terminal or professional degree holders start their careers in postdoctoral temporary research jobs, the BLS notes.

As far as job duties, the BLS says that biochemists and biophysicists are expected to "study the chemical and physical principles of living things and of biological processes, such as cell development, growth, heredity, and disease." Most work full-time in laboratories or offices, conducting research experiments and recording and analyzing the results.
