The investigation began in June of 2024 after state police received a Cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which led to the execution of a search warrant at Thomas' home in December of 2024. Authorities say he is accused of possessing and having access to images and videos consistent with child sexual exploitation.

The arrest was the result of a joint investigation involving the Troop F Computer Crimes Unit, the State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Kingston, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
