County Executive, District Attorney Participate in 'Senior Health and Fitness Day'

The fifth, annual Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day took place Thursday, May 26 at Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery.

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus and District Attorney David Hoovler participated in the fifth, annual Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery on Thursday, May 26.

Neuhaus and Hoovler, partnered with the Orange County Office for the Aging, Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Health to bring local seniors a day of health, fitness and fun. The event attracted about 200 people and coincided with National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

“This wonderful event has turned into a tradition and serves as an opportunity to remind seniors to keep active,” Neuhaus said. “It was a pleasure spending some time with this group today. Seniors are living longer and healthier lives, and Senior Health and Fitness Day celebrates that. Staying active and fit plays an important role in maintaining good health as we grow older.”

The purpose of Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day is to encourage seniors to exercise, eat well and have fun. Throughout the day, Healthy Orange, part of the Orange County Department of Health, conducted health screenings and distributed health information. Local businesses, healthcare providers and vendors also participated, performing healthcare screenings. The day also included healthy cooking demonstrations, master gardening demonstrations, a fitness walk and many other games and activities.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day takes place in May in conjunction with Older Americans Month. The goal of the initiative is to keep older Americans healthy and fit. It is the country’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults.

“Senior Health and Fitness Day is a great way for the community to come together,” said AnnMarie Maglione, director of the Orange County Office for the Aging. “We attract more and more seniors to this event each year. County Executive Neuhaus, District Attorney Hoovler and the Office for the Aging will continue to reach out to older adults in the community with resources to help them remain healthy.”

The Orange County Office for the Aging is committed to meeting the special service needs of Orange County’s senior population and the families and friends who care for them. The primary goal of the Office for the Aging is maintaining the dignity, well-being and independence of senior citizens.
