Police said a Brooklyn man was charged with vehicular manslaughter and impaired driving, among other charges.

HYDE PARK, NY — A woman from Hyde Park was killed Sunday while trying to cross a street in Brooklyn and a Brooklyn man is facing several charges.

The New York City Police Department said Katherine Harris, 31, of Hyde Park, was struck by a car while she was attempting to cross Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street in Brooklyn.

Police said, just before 10 p.m. Sunday, officers were sent to the scene of a car striking a pedestrian.

Harris was declared dead by emergency medical services.

An investigation determined that a 2012 Volvo S60 — driven by Erick S. Taxilaga Trujillo, 27, of Brooklyn — was traveling west on Atlantic Avenue at a high rate of speed. He went through a steady red traffic signal at the intersection of Clinton Street and struck Harris, police said.

Authorities said Taxilaga Trujillo continued west on Atlantic and struck the rear of a 2018 Honda Accord, which was driven by a 40-year-old man who was going west in the right lane.

Both vehicles veered to the right and hit an outdoor dining structure on the north curb before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Honda was not injured.

Police said Taxilaga Trujillo was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, driving while ability impaired and refusal to take a breath test.

The investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
