NEWBURGH, NY — A local resident was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison for shooting two people in the feet following a July 2024 argument.

Jason Brown, 33, of Newburgh, will be on supervised release for five years after he serves his 12-year sentence, according to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.

Brown pleaded guilty in April in Orange County Court to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The shooting happened July 31, 2024, around 12:30 p.m.

Brown argued with the male victim, left the area, then returned within minutes with a firearm and shot the couple, according to prosecutors. The victims both suffered foot injuries.

Brown fled the scene and discarded the gun and clothing, according to the district attorney’s office. Law enforcement searched Brown’s apartment and recovered ammunition which matched the same kind found in the firearm and at the scene of the shooting, prosecutors said.

Hoovler commended the work of investigators, including the Non-Fatal Shooting Taskforce.

“Their hard work ensured that this violent offender will remain behind bars for more than a decade,” Hoovler said.
