Newburgh Man Dies After Being Shot

Police said he was found in a car that had been shot multiple times.

NEWBURGH, NY — A Newburgh man who was found early Monday morning with a gunshot wound died.

The City of Newburgh Police Department said officers were called to the area of 211 Liberty St. for a rollover motor vehicle accident shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Authorities said they found the 39-year-old man, whose name was not released, trapped in a vehicle that had been shot multiple times.

After he was extricated by members of the City of Newburgh Fire Department, he was found to have suffered a gunshot wound to his right upper back. The man was unconscious and unresponsive, authorities said.

He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer said they found six expended shell casings in the area of S. Lander Street and Benkard Avenue.

Police said they are looking for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting.
