NJ Man Killed In Jet Ski Collision On Hudson River

The accident, which is still under investigation, happened on the river in the city of Newburgh.

NEWBURGH, NY — A collision of jet skis on the Hudson River led to the death of a New Jersey man.

The New York State Police said, shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, troopers and members of the City of Newburgh Police Department and Mobile Life EMS were sent to a jet ski accident on the Hudson River in the city of Newburgh.

A preliminary investigation found that Jorge Arribasplata, 48, of Saddlebrook, New Jersey, was operating a 2018 Yamaha Jet Ski with a passenger. David Torres, 49, of Lodi, New Jersey, was operating a 2017 Yamaha Jet Ski also with a passenger.

Both jet skis were going north on the Hudson River when they collided with each other.

Torres and his passenger, later identified as Charles Sanchez, 48, of Belleville, New Jersey, were both thrown into the river.

Local boaters at the marina immediately offered aid and helped get everyone out of the river.

Torres and Sanchez were taken to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital.

Torres was listed in critical condition, but Sanchez was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said it was confirmed that neither Torres nor Arribasplata or their passengers had been drinking alcohol.

This is an ongoing investigation, authorities said.
