HV Man Used Hammer To Try To Kill Woman, Her Son

PORT JERVIS, NY — A man who was accused of trying to kill a woman and seriously injuring her 18-year-old son was found guilty by a jury of all charges.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said on Friday that Shawn Beach, 43 of Port Jervis was convicted of two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault.

He faces up to 50 years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 3.

Beach was sent to the Orange County jail without bail following the jury’s verdict.

Prosecutors said, on Dec. 11, each swung a hammer in the direction of a woman in a resident in the city of Port Jervis.

The woman’ 18-year-old son rushed downstairs to help her when he heard her screams.

Beach turned to the son and stuck him in the head with the hammer, fracturing his skull.

He was treated at Westchester Medical Center for life-threatening injuries, which he survived.

Hoovler said Beach’s terrifying acts of brutality have rightfully resulted in his conviction.

“Acts of domestic violence are as senseless as they are dangerous,” he said. “Thanks to the immediate intervention of lifesaving medical treatment, a life was saved.

“The significant prison sentence that this offender faces will ensure that he is not able to terrorize others for a long time,” Hoovler said.
