Prison Sentence For Fatal Stabbing In Newburgh

NEWBURGH, NY — An Orange County man found out how long he will be spending in prison for fatally stabbing another man.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Thursday that Eric McCollum, 28, of Newburgh, was sentenced to 15 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision in relation to his pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter.
Prosecutors said, shortly before 2 a.m. May 28, McCollum and the victim engaged in an argument on Broadway in the city of Newburgh.

During the argument, McCollum stabbed the man once in the torso, piercing his heart, and then fled from the scene.
City of Newburgh police responded to the scene and gave the victim immediate medical attention. However, the man later dies of his injuries.

Detectives developed McCollum as the suspect, and he was arrested days after the incident.
Hoovler said that senseless violence can result in irreversible consequences.
“I hope the sentence imposed grants a degree of closure for the family of the victim,” he said.
