Rockland Man Killed In Highlands Crash
Police said the man, after passing a dump truck by using the shoulder, ended up crossing over into oncoming traffic.
HIGHLANDS, NY — One person was killed Wednesday in a crash on Route 293 in the town of Highlands.
The New York State Police said the collision happened around 2 p.m.
An investigation found that a 2019 BMW 335i, driven by Dillon Ortiz, 28, of Haverstraw, was traveling north on Route 293 and passed, using the eastern shoulder, a dump truck going in the same direction.

After passing the truck, police said Ortiz reentered the roadway and crossed over into the southern lane and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado truck on the driver’s side, causing the BMW to leave the roadway and roll off the eastern shoulder. It came to rest in a wooded area.
Troopers arrived at the scene and saw Ortiz in his car with a serious head injury. They immediately began life-saving measures.

Oritz was taken to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Dina Vaston, 28, of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, who was a passenger in the truck, was taken to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was treated for a broken leg.
The driver of the truck did not suffer any injuries, police said.
