School Crossing Guard Dies After Being Hit By Vehicle In Poughkeepsie: PD
An investigation into the accident is ongoing, according to police.
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A school crossing guard has succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Monday morning, according to police.
James Montanino, 72, who works for the city, was hit while performing his duties helping children on their way to Smith Elementary School, according to Det. Lt. Sean McCarthy.
Montanino was rushed to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where he later died, police said.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of 372 Church St.
The driver, a 38-year-old Poughkeepsie resident, remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. Police did not release the name of the motorist Monday.

“At this time, there is no indication that alcohol or drug impairment contributed to the incident,” police said, in an announcement. “The crash appears to be a tragic accident; however, the investigation remains ongoing.”
Police closed the roadway for hours while they conducted an on-scene investigation, but the area has since reopened to traffic.
“The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Montanino, who faithfully served our community as a crossing guard,” police said.
