Son Threatened To Stab Father, Then The Father Grabbed A Shotgun: PD

The son was arrested for felony first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, Harriman police said.

HARRIMAN, NY — A Hudson Valley family in crisis led to a dangerous standoff between a son and his elderly father.

The Harriman Police Department says that on Tuesday, around 9:46 p.m., they received a report of an altercation between a person armed with a knife and another person armed with a shotgun or rifle at a home on Snoop Street. Several law enforcement agencies responded to assist, along with local EMS.

Officers found that 34-year-old Daniel Kochovos threatened to stab his 70-year-old father with a knife. Both men reside at that address.

Officers entered and secured the residence to ensure the safety of the victim. Further investigation found that during the incident, the father grabbed a shotgun because of the son's threats.

There were no reported injuries sustained by the suspect or victim.

Kochovos was arrested for felony first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, and misdemeanor second-degree obstructing governmental administration. He was taken to Garnet Medical Center for evaluation, and is scheduled to to appear in the Village of Harriman Court on April 17.

Harriman police thanked Woodbury police, Monroe police, Tuxedo police, Warwick police, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police, DEC police, the Monroe Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Blooming Grove Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the regional Tactical Response Unit for their assistance during the incident.
