POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The city of Poughkeepsie will open Spratt Park Pool Friday.

There will be extended hours this season, city officials said, but its plan to make use of the Poughkeepsie Middle School pool will be delayed because of a mechanical issue.

The old pool house at Pulaski Park has been demolished and the city is using $2.4 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to cover the cost of a new one.

Officials said the new pool house will include a men’s room, women’s room, family bathrooms, a lifeguard room, an office welcome desk, a storage area and a kitchen.

The Poughkeepsie school district has agreed to allow the city to use the middle school pool for designated lap hours and for swimming lessons.

Dutchess County will provide free bus service from the Pulaski location to Spratt Pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 6, making it easier for residents living near Pulaski to get to and from Spratt. This will be a special route service that will not make additional stops.

Spratt Pool will be open with fees waived again this year and with expanded hours: from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. The first two hours will be for lap swimming for adults and competitive level swimmers, with open, recreational swimming available from 11 a.m. until close. Pool rules can be found through this link.

On a first-come, first-served basis, bus transportation will be available from Pulaski Park off Washington Avenue to the Spratt Park Pool Wilbur Boulevard at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Return trips will be made at 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

There is also fixed-route bus service requiring a far that stops at Pulaski Park, the Transit Hub on Market Street and the corner of Hooke Avenue and Wilbur Boulevard — about a half-mile walk from Spratt Pool. The schedule can be seen at this link.

When repairs at the middle school pool are completed, it will be used predominantly in the mornings Monday through Friday through mid-August. Lesson sign-up sheets will be available at both the middle school and Spratt pools. The city will supply the lifeguard staff and any necessary pool treatment chemicals and will also buy an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant lift for the middle school pool. The pool will also be available for adult swimming from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The city will only be able to use the middle school pool until Aug. 16, after which it will be closed for maintenance and upkeep to reopen for students and athletic teams before the school year begins. Spratt Pool will remain open until Aug. 25.
