Suspect Fleeing Traffic Stop, Sideswipes Car, Sending It Careening Into Yet Another Car: NYSP

Once he was stopped, the 39-y.o. Poughkeepsie man was found with drugs, and a loaded, stolen 9MM gun inside his car, according to police.

CITY OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A Poughkeepsie man's short flight from justice caused big headaches for everyone around him, according to police.

New York State Police say that on Monday, around 3:35 p.m., members of the Troop K Community Stabilization Unit, along with troopers from Poughkeepsie, stopped a vehicle traveling west on Main Street, in the City of Poughkeepsie, for traffic violations.

State police say the vehicle briefly complied but then fled, leading to a short pursuit that ended when the vehicle sideswiped an occupied vehicle, forcing it into another occupied vehicle, before eventually stopping.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, identified as 39-year-old Shamar Parker, of Poughkeepsie, was taken into custody without further incident.

After a search, troopers found narcotics on Parker's person, in addition to a loaded, stolen 9MM handgun and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with felony second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felony fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, felony criminal possession of a firearm, felony fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, misdemeanor seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment, misdemeanor third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and several vehicle/traffic violations.

Parker was arraigned before the City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center.
