Woman Dies After Fall From Cliff In Hudson Valley Park

Police said the woman and her husband had been hiking and stopped on a cliff to take photos.

ROCHESTER, NY — A woman from Singapore died after falling from a cliff in Minnewaska State Park in the town of Rochester Friday.

The New York State Police said that, shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, troopers from the Ellenville barracks were sent to Minnewaska State Park in Rochester in Ulster County for a report of an injured hiker.

The initial investigation found that Nur Aisyah Binte MD Akbar, 39, and her husband Abdul Rauf Bin Mohd Said, 41, both of Singapore, were hiking on Beacon Hill Trail when they stopped to take photos at the edge of a cliff.

Binte MD Akbar lost her footing, police said, and fell about 70 feet. Bin Mohd Said called 911.

State police aviation was brought in to hoist the woman to safety.

Binte MD Akbar was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital where she died of her injuries.

Other responding agencies who assisted in the rescue included the New York State Park Police, Park Operations staff, state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers and various fire and EMT personnel.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.
