MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Amazon may not be moving its headquarters to New York, but it is hard at work expanding its retail footprint in the city.

Amazon opened its second "Amazon Go" convenience store Tuesday in a 1,700-square-foot space at 300 Park Avenue between East 49th and 50th streets, the company announced in a press release. Shoppers can grab grocery staples and ready-to-eat off the shelves and leave the store without having to pay at a cashier.

Shoppers enter the store using a mobile app that is connected to a mode of payment. When shoppers leave the store, the app charges the card users have linked to their accounts. A network of cameras inside the stores watch shoppers in order to keep track which items people are taking off the shelves.

The Midtown opening comes just one month after Amazon opened its first "Go" store in Tribeca and is the company's thirteenth "Go" location in total. The Tribeca store became the first Amazon Go location to accept cash following backlash from those who believe cashless stores discriminate against the poor.

Amazon's Midtown store will be open on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to a press release. Goods from a number of local vendors such as Dominique Ansel, Magnolia Bakery, Ess-a-Bagel, Epicured, Bien Cuit, Hale & Hearty and Terranova Bakery will be offered at the location.
