Since 2018, Stonewall Day has served as a national day of awareness to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots — an event that kicked off the fight for LGBTQ rights — and raises money for the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC), which will be the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park System and is scheduled to open on June 28, 2024.
Past Stonewall Day ambassadors have included Andy Cohen, Chelsea Clinton, Angelica Ross, Christian Siriano, Anna Wintour, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Donatella Versace, Dustin Lance Black, George Takei, Madonna, and Whoopi Goldberg. Performers, like Kesha, Cynthia Erivo, Kim Petras, Adam Lambert, Alicia Keys, Hayley Kiyoko, and Mila Jam, have all taken stage for Stonewall Day as well. President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift have all delivered remarks at past Stonewall Day events.
