Cops Pull Engagement Ring From Midtown Sewer Grate, Police Say

The couple stayed on scene following the mishap, and the ring was promptly returned.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The NYPD went just five days into 2019 before having to pull an engagement ring from a sewer grate, police said.

The engagement mishap occurred within the confines of the NYPD's Midtown North precinct — which includes parts of Times Square and other city landmarks such as Rockefeller Center — on Saturday when a man went down on one knee and dropped an engagement ring into the sewer system, police said.

The mishap drew an impressive police presence. Neighborhood coordination officers from the Midtown North precinct were aided by the Emergency Services Unit and FDNY personnel in fishing the diamond ring out of the sewers, police said.

The couple stayed on scene and the ring was promptly returned, the NYPD's Midtown North Precicnt commander said on Twitter while adding the public service announcement: "Attention all newly engaged! Please avoid sewer grates at all cost! Thank you."

A ring rescue in December went viral on social media after the couple returned to their home in the United Kingdom before being reunited with their missing jewelry. The couple flagged down officers in Times Square for help, but never filed a report. An NYPD post seeking the identity of the couple was retweeted 32,000 times.
