At these events, free backpacks will be filled with notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, and glue sticks among other essential school supplies, organizers said.

"Our annual backpack giveaways are a highlight for New York Restoration Project and a great way to support our city's children as they head back to school,” Lynn Bodnar Kelly, the executive director of the New York Restoration Project.

"We're proud to engage our gardens for these events and help our communities get a successful start to the academic year."

Here's where to stock up before New York City's public schools open on Sept. 4. At each event, a child must be present to receive the school supplies.
