Several community organizations and politicians are hosting giveaways with backpacks, notebooks and more this month.

NEW YORK CITY — Looking for free school supplies?
New York City has plenty of events coming up for kids and parents looking to save on back-to-school shopping for the new school year. Plus, many of these events also have games, snacks and music.
The New York Restoration Project will host several free backpack and school supply giveaways this month at local community gardens around the city.

At these events, free backpacks will be filled with notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, and glue sticks among other essential school supplies, organizers said.
"Our annual backpack giveaways are a highlight for New York Restoration Project and a great way to support our city's children as they head back to school,” Lynn Bodnar Kelly, the executive director of the New York Restoration Project.

"We're proud to engage our gardens for these events and help our communities get a successful start to the academic year."
Here's where to stock up before New York City's public schools open on Sept. 4. At each event, a child must be present to receive the school supplies.
- Saturday, August 16, 3pm-5pm : Glover Street Community Garden (Castle Hill, The Bronx) in partnership with Councilmember Amanda Farías
- Sunday, August 17, 12pm-2pm: 50 Cent Community Garden (Jamaica, Queens)
- Friday, August 22, 12pm-3pm: Essex Street Community Garden (Cypress Hills, Brooklyn) featuring a cooking demo with chef Genny Mack
- Saturday, August 23, 5pm-7pm: McLeod’s Community Garden (Brownsville, Brooklyn)
- Saturday, August 23, 2pm-4pm at Los Amigos Community Garden (East Harlem, Manhattan)
- Friday, August 29, 5pm-9pm: Bed-Stuy Community Garden (Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn) in partnership with Councilmember Chi Ossé
- Saturday, August 30, 12pm-2pm: Target Bronx Community Garden (Highbridge, The Bronx) featuring a cooking demo with chef Brandy Cochrane
- Saturday, August 30, 3pm-5pm at Creston Avenue Playground (Fordham, The Bronx)
- Sunday, August 31, 3pm-5pm: Eastchester Road Community Garden (Eastchester, The Bronx) in partnership with Councilmember Kevin C. Riley
