Hell's Kitchen Landlords Are Some of New York's Worst

More than a dozen apartment buildings in Hell's Kitchen are owned by landlords who made the official list of worst landlords in NYC 2016.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — Over a dozen apartment buildings in Hell's Kitchen are owned by one of New York City's 100 worst landlords of 2016, Patch has found. Public Advocate Letitia James released the full list of the city's most awful landlords on Thursday, and names like Bruce Haley, Richard Lagana, Martin Baumrind, and Allan Goldman, who all own at least one property in Hell's Kitchen, made the infamous list.

The map by James' office shows the addresses and landlords of all the properties they own. Patch took a screenshot of all the buildings in Hell's Kitchen, because there was a noticeable spattering of them.

The landlords' scores are based on the total number of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) violations and Department of Buildings (DOB) violations at each of the properties they own.

Allan Goldman, who was named the second worst landlord on the list, owns two properties in the neighborhood: 345 W. 46th St., for which there are three active violations under the Department of Buildings website, and 664 9th Ave., for which there is one active violation.

Patch found that the two lobby entrances to 664 9th Ave. were dysfunctional and unlocked, so anyone could walk in off of 9th Ave.

Goldman racked up a whopping 1,193 HPD violations and 15 DOB violations in 2016.

664 9th Ave. is owned by the number 2 worst landlord in New York City.

520 W. 47th St. is owned by the number 24 worst landlord in New York City.

Martin Baumrind, number 24 on the list, owns 520-526 W. 47th St. He received 673 HPD violations and six DOB violations. But Harold Rivera, who's lived in 520 W. 47th St. for 25 years, said he's never had a problem with Baumrind.

"All those violations are usually from people who just don't wanna pay their rent," he told Patch.
