Krispy Kreme Launches NYC Comeback With Penn Station Shop Revamp

Krispy Kreme plans to open six new stores to New York City, including a giant Times Square flagship.

NEW YORK, NY — Beloved donut seller Krispy Kreme begins its resurgence in New York City on Thursday with the opening of a remodeled store inside Penn Station, which will kick off a six-store expansion in the city, the company announced Wednesday.

Krispy Kreme's renovated Penn Station shop, located on the Amtrak level in 2 Penn Plaza, will feature a full doughnut menu, hot and cold beverages and mobile ordering, a company spokesperson said. The opening marks the first new Krispy Kreme in New York City since the company cut down its presence to just one store — the Penn Station location — in 2009.

The expansion will continue with the Feb. 4 opening of a store on Sixth Avenue and West 37th Street and then with the opening of the company's flagship location in Times Square. The massive Times Square store will feature the world's largest "hot light," the iconic Krispy Kreme signal that lets customers know when fresh donuts just came out of the oven.

"New Yorkers expect the best, including the best doughnuts. Their reaction to our Times Square flagship announcement last year was tremendous. It fueled our excitement to expand in the Big Apple in an even bigger way," Andrew Skehan, Krispy Kreme’s President of North America, said in a statement.

Krispy Kreme expects the Times Square flagship to be the company's busiest store when it opens. At 4,500 square feet, the location will also be the largest in the company. Customers at the shop will get a first-hand look at how Krispy Kreme donuts are made, beginning with the mixing of ingredients and ending with the glaze waterfall. The experience is called the "donut theater" and includes stadium seating for guests.

By the end of 2020 Krispy Kreme will operate seven stores in New York City. Shops are planned for neighborhoods such as the Financial District, the Bronx's East Fordham, Harlem and the Upper West Side, company officials announced.
