"Leave her alone," the Daily News reported the stranger saying, adding that he fired two shots from the gun.
NYC Transit President Richard Davey described a video of the incident as "unusual" in a news conference Wednesday.
“He looks very calm, pulls out a gun, fires two shots, calmly puts the gun back in his bag and walks away,” Davey said.
“We don’t tolerate this in New York City Transit, period,” Davey added.
Nobody was injured from the gunshots, police said.
Matthew Roesch, 49, was later arrested and charged with attempted robbery.
