Midtown Mugger Shoots Victim Before Stealing Jewelry: Police

A mugging on a Midtown street on Sunday ended with the robbery victim being shot in the leg, police said.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A robbery on a Midtown street early Sunday ended with a victim being shot in the leg by the mugger, police said.

The robbery happened around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, when a 35-year-old man was walking along East 30th Street between Second and Third Avenues.

An unidentified suspect approached him and asked him to hand over his watch and necklace. The man complied, but the suspect still shot the victim in the thigh, police said.

The suspect fled with the watch and necklace while the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

Police shared footage of the robbery, showing the victim toss his valuables to the sidewalk at gunpoint before fleeing onto the street.

Overall crime is down so far this year in the 17th Precinct, where the robbery took place. Robberies, however, have risen compared to last year, as have assaults and car thefts, according to NYPD statistics.
