Midtown Is NYC's Darkest Neighborhood During The Winter: Study

Building in Manhattan's dense, central neighborhood receive about an hour of direct sunlight per day.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Office workers and residents of Midtown Manhattan will feel like they haven't seen the sun in months by the end of the winter, according to a new study.

The high-density area was named New York City's darkest neighborhood in the winter in a study by Localize.com that analyzes the amount of direct sunlight buildings in each city neighborhood receive during the coldest months of the year. Midtown buildings receive just about one hour of direct sunlight per day during the season, according to the study.

Depending on how you determine the geographical boundaries of Midtown, the area could include up to four of the top five darkest neighborhoods in Manhattan. The statistics whizzes at Localize determined the borough's five darkest neighborhoods are: Midtown, East Midtown, Midtown South, Nomad and the Financial District.

"Access to sunlight has very real implications for health and wellness," researchers noted. "In the late fall and winter months, those with Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, know all too well how the darker days bring on depressive symptoms, listless feelings and increased moodiness."

Localize also calculated the numbers by borough, determining that Manhattan is the darkest in the city followed by the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
