MoMA Workers Demand Fair Wages During Walkout

The union that represents workers at the Museum of Modern art organized a walkout at the Midtown institution.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Workers at the Museom of Modern Art walked out of their jobs Monday and occupied the West 53rd Street institution's lobby to demand the museum negotiate a new contract with their union, according to reports.

United Auto Workers Local 2110, which represents workers from across the museum's many departments, organized the walkout because the museum won't give workers a fair raise, the arts publication Hyper Allergic first reported. The contracts of the 250 MoMA workers represented by UAW Local 2110 expired in may, according to the report.

Union members wore matching blue t-shirts and held signs reading #WeAreMoMA and #MoMASolidarity during the walk out, according to photos posted by UAW Local 2110.

"Today MoMA workers left our desks, meetings, & posts to show the museum we are unified in our fight for a fair contract! We demand fair wages & benefits and we will continue demonstrating until the museum recognizes our tireless work!" the union posted on its Twitter page.

Museum officials told Hyper Allergic that they continue to bargain with UAW Local 2100 and that "It’s been a productive process and we’re confident we’ll arrive at an amicable resolution."
