MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Elevators and escalators at one of the Grand Central Terminal's busy entrances will be taken out of service Monday for upgrades, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials announced.

Upgrades to the elevators and escalators in the 42nd Street entrance are part of an MTA plan to modernize the east side transit hub, officials said. Planned improvements include greater reliability, 24-hour safety monitoring systems and larger elevator cabs.

The MTA estimates that commuters who come through Grand Central Terminal should expect the station to appear more crowded during the duration of the improvement project. Passengers should enter the station on Lexington Avenue to access the subway.

Passengers who are unable to use stairs or escalators should access the station using the elevator located outside Grand Central on Lexington Avenue, MTA officials said.

The MTA did not estimate how long the upgrades will take to complete.
