New CitiBike Stations Coming To Hell's Kitchen: Here's Where
Nearly a dozen new CitiBike docks are coming to Hell's Kitchen, Hudson Yards and Chelsea as part of the system's ambitious infill plan.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — Nearly a dozen new CitiBike stations were either recently installed or will soon be added around the West Side of Manhattan, aiming to keep up with a surge in demand for the bike-share service, officials revealed Wednesday.
The 10 new docks in Hell's Kitchen, Hudson Yards and Chelsea are part of CitiBike's five-year infill plan, which will add 16,000 new docks to the neighborhoods already served by the bike system, which currently have about 29,000 stations combined.
That expansion is sorely needed in the West Side's Community Board 4: according to a recent study by the Department of Transportation, the district needs over 2,700 docks to keep up with demand, a representative told the board this week.

Here's where new docks will be installed on the West Side:
- West 17th Street and Seventh Avenue (south side of street)
- Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street (west side of street)
- West 25th Street and Ninth Avenue (south side of street)
- West 33rd Street and 10th Avenue (south side of street)
- West 34th Street and Hudson Boulevard East (south side of street)
- Hudson Boulevard East and West 36th Street (east side of street)
- West 39th Street and Ninth Avenue (north side of street)
- West 47th Street and Ninth Avenue (north side of street)
- Eighth Avenue and West 49th Street (west side of street, already installed)
- West 54th Street and Ninth Avenue (south side of street, already installed)
Once completed by 2024, the city hopes the expansion will "improve the system by reducing instances where riders can’t find a bike or a dock," DOT representative Bryan Perrett said — referencing increasingly common problems cited by CitiBike users.

Board members greeted the expansion warmly, but pressed the DOT representatives about the lack of CitiBike docks on the far West Side, serving residents of the new developments west of 11th Avenue as well as popular attractions like Little Island and Chelsea Piers.
"I also live on 11th Avenue at 53rd street, and if I don’t leave my apartment by 10 o’clock to get a CitiBike, there's four docks around me and they’re all empty," board member Jeffrey LeFrancois said.

Echoing that concern was Lesley Kiger, general manager of Chelsea Piers Fitness near West 20th Street, who said her customers ask "10 to 15 questions per day" about the lack of CitiBike stations near the facility.
As it stands, the lack of docks in Hudson River Park forces Chelsea Piers visitors to park their bikes on the opposite side of the West Side Highway, then trek across one of its few crossings — an ordeal that adds "an extra 10 to 12 minutes per trip," Kiger said.
Perrett, the DOT presenter, acknowledged the concerns but said that installing docks in Hudson River Park is made difficult by the need to negotiate with the state, as well as space constraints in the narrow green space.
The new docks unveiled this week join another set of Hell's Kitchen docks first discussed last year and installed in recent months.
Separate from the infill project, CitiBike is also planning a 32,000-dock expansion to areas of the city not yet served by the system, including the Bronx and parts of northern Queens.
