NYC Veteran's Day Parade 2018: Route, Start Time, Streets Closed

NEW YORK, NY — More than 25,000 people — many of them veteran's and active-duty military members — will march up Fifth Avenue to pay gratitude to those who have served and are serving in the United States military for New York City's annual Veteran's Day Parade.

This year's parade marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and the Unites States Army is the featured military branch, according to the parade's sponsor, the United Veterans War Council.

Medal of Honor Recipient Florent Groberg will serve as the grand marshal for this year's parade. Groberg, a retired Army captain, served in the War in Afghanistan. Army veterans Mike Erwin, Job Mashiriki and Jason McCarthy will serve as honorary marshals, according to the United Veterans War Council.

Whether you're planning on attening the parade or avoiding it, here's everything you need to know:

Start time:

Sunday's events begin with a traditional opening ceremony that takes place at 10 a.m. near Madison Square Park on 24th Street and Fifth Avenue. The ceremony ends with a wreath laying at the Eternal Light Monument at 11:00 a.m.

The parade itself begins around 11:15 a.m.

Parade route:

The parade begins near Madison Square Park and heads up Fifth Avenue. Marchers will begin their walk at West 26th Street and will head north to West 46th Street. The route is just over 1 mile long and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

How to get there:

Those interested in watching the parade in person should take public transportation in order to avoid street closures. The R, W and 6 lines all stop at 23rd street near Madison Square Park. The Bryant Park (B/D/F/N) and Grand Central Terminal (Metro-North, 4, 5, 6, 7 and Times Square Shuttle) stations are also situated near the end of the parde route.

Street closures:

As with any large parade in New York City, security will be tight on Sunday. The NYPD will be shutting down the following roads along and near the parade route:

• Fifth Avenue between Broadway and 23rd Street
• 24th Street between Sixth Avenue and 5th Avenue
• 25th Street between Sixth Avenue and 5th Avenue
• 26th Street between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue
• 27th Street between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue

Route:

• Fifth Avenue between 24th Street and 46th Street

Dispersal:

• 46th Street between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue
• Fifth Avenue between 46th Street and 48th Street

Festival:

• 48th Street between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue
