MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Officers with the NYPD's elite Emergency Services Unit saved a man's life Wednesday morning in a dramatic rescue more than fifty stories in the air on top of a Midtown Manhattan high-rise.

Officers with the ESU responded to the 55th floor of a building on Park Avenue near East 56th Street after receiving reports of a man threatening to jump, police officials said. When police approached the man, he began to swing a metal pipe at them, an NYPD spokesperson said.

"He was swinging a pipe at the cops stating he wanted to jump, but they persisted, putting themselves in harm's way [and] saved his life," police wrote in a post to the main NYPD Twitter account.
