Police sources told the Daily News that they didn't have reason to believe the women knew each other. They also said the suspect had a history of mental health issues.

Detectives said they were investigating the incident as potentially related to an Oct. 19 death on the subway tracks in the Union Square station, which was thought to be a suicide, according to the Daily News.
