MIDTOWN, NY — An arrested man accused of theft stole himself away from a hospital visit while still in police custody, according to a report, and was re-arrested when he returned to the precinct to get ask for his belongings back.

Darryl Stevens, 36, snuck out of Mount Sinai West just after midnight on Monday after being admitted to the hospital on Saturday following an arrest for petit larceny, according to the New York Post.

On Monday at about 12:40 a.m., Stevens, who the Post reports has 54 prior arrests, simply got up and walked out of the hospital, according to the storied tabloid.

About 12 hours later at 12:30 P.M., Stevens showed up at the Midtown North Precinct — not to turn himself in, but to collect his personal items that were still with the NYPD following his arrest Saturday, the Post reports.

While it's not clear how the man in police custody was able to freely walk out of the hospital, it is certainly a less dramatic escape than that of Yenchun Chen, who tied together bedsheets to abscond from a fifth-floor winder at Mount Sinai Beth Israel before hailing a cab. He was captured about a month later in Queens.

A NYPD spokesperson told the Post that the matter was "under internal review."
