Teen Gunman Arrested For Deadly Hell's Kitchen Shooting: NYPD

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — A teenager is facing charges for a fatal shooting in Hell's Kitchen, an NYPD spokesperson said.

A 17-year-old, who was not identified by police, was arrested and charged with murder and criminal weapons possession for a shooting that occurred on the corner of West 51st Street and 10th Avenue about 1:30 a.m Thursday.

The teen is accused of shooting 31-year-old Bronx resident Michael Smalls during a fight, police said. After being shot, Smalls tried to escape by jumping into a black SUV and driving off, but crashed two blocks away on West 50th Street and 11th Avenue, police said.

Medics rushed Smalls to Mount Sinai Hospital but doctors were unable to save his life.

Thursday's shooting was the first murder reported in 2019 in the Midtown North precinct — which spans 43rd Street to 60th Street between the Hudson River and Lexington Avenue — according to precinct crime stats as of Jan. 19. Only one homicide was reported in the precinct during the entire year of 2019.
