Incident Report: Mt. Sinai Resident Falls Victim to Phone Scam

A Mt. Sinai resident has fallen victim to the phone scam about which Suffolk police recently warned residents. According to a police report, an unknown male called the victim at approximately 11 a.m. on March 27 claiming to threaten a family member with harm if the victim did not immediately wire money. The victim, a woman, complied with the request by sending an undisclosed amount of money at King Kullen.

Residents also reported a handful of other phone scams:

• On March 26, a resident of Peachtree Lane in Mt. Sinai reported at 8:45 p.m. that a male caller with an accent threatened to harm family members, who turned out to be safe.
• Another resident of Peachtree Lane in Mt. Sinai reported at 2:55 p.m. on March 28 that a caller asked for money to help family members whom the caller said had been in a bad accident. The family members turned out to be safe.
• A resident of Savanna Circle in Mt. Sinai reported a similar phone scam experience on March 27 at 11 a.m.

ASSAULT

• A male patron at Napper Tandy's in Miller Place reported a physical altercation with another person, who allegedly threw something at his head and caused him to need stitches. The incident took place March 28 at approximately 1:30 a.m.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF

• Two residents of Oleeta Road in Mt. Sinai reported mailboxes had been damaged by a juvenile on March 23 at 11 p.m. and March 24 at 1 a.m. Neither resident pressed charges, saying restitution had been made.

AGGRAVATED HARASSMENT

• An employee of Lindy's Taxi in Mt. Sinai reported March 27 at 9 p.m. that unknown people made several calls to the taxi company, giving a bogus address and using threatening language.
