1. Peggy Spellman Hoey tells us what two local students have been named National Merit Scholars. Rocky Point High School senior Ashlynne G. Xavier will receive a scholarship. She plans to attend University of Rochester and study biomedical engineering. Gavin Strumpf of Longwood High School also won a National Merit Scholarship. He plans to go to the University of Alabama. 2. Peggy Spellman Hoey also has the story on the second candidate to announce a run for the 1st Congressional District seat now held by Republican Lee Zeldin. Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn is a Democrat who lives in Setauket. She posted on Twitter that she wants to give "middle class families a seat at the table." Hahn and Legis. Bridget Fleming of Sag Harbor will face off in a primary. (Patch)

3. Jason Louser from Shoreham will swim at the Olympic Trials in Omaha this weekend. The Cal State swimmer will compete in five events. Louser won the state record in the 100-meter breaststroke. (Newsday)

- The owners of The Hartlin Inn in Sound Beach announced they are retiring and selling the business to a new family. The new owners will rename the restaurant The Firehouse in honor of their son, who was a FDNY firefighter who died as a result of injuries sustained at a fire in 2011. (Facebook)
