Wrong-Way Driver Who Killed 2 LI Teens Gets Up To 25 Years: Nassau DA

Amandeep Singh pleaded guilty last month for the 2023 crash, prosecutors said.

MINEOLA, NY — The man behind the wheel of a wrong-way crash that killed two Roslyn teenagers was sentenced on Friday to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison, prosecutors announced on Friday.

Amandeep Singh, 36, pleaded guilty last month to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree manslaughter, two counts of second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting as a felony and driving while ability impaired by combined influence of alcohol and a drug, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said.

Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, both 14-year-olds, attended Roslyn Middle School where they were members of the Roslyn High School Tennis team.

"The lives of every driver on North Broadway that night were meaningless to Amandeep Singh, as he sped, high on cocaine and drunk on alcohol, until he crossed over traffic and crashed into a car full of teenage boys. Ethan Falkowtiz and Drew Hassenbein will never grow up, graduate from high school, or go to college because of this selfish and callous defendant. Now that his sentence has been handed down, all that awaits Amandeep Singh are the four walls of a prison cell,” said Donnelly.

On the evening of May 3, 2023, Singh was driving a 2021 Dodge Ram TRX 95 miles per hour, crossed over the road in Jericho, and continued south in the northbound lanes while intoxicated and high on cocaine, Donnelly said.

He crashed into a vehicle that had four teenagers. An analysis of the event data recorder in Singh’s vehicle indicated that he was driving 75 miles per hour in a 40 mile-per-hour zone at impact, prosecutors said.

"We need legislation that ensures drivers like Singh who make these disastrous choices face consequences that reflect the true devastation they cause and adequately hold them accountable. I will continue to urge our New York State lawmakers to work with my office and the families of victims like Ethan and Drew to impose tougher penalties for those who drive under the influence and take precious lives," Donnelly said.
