Fire Sweeps Through Nassau Businesses, Apartments; 15 Displaced

Heavy flames ripped through several businesses and multiple apartments, causing extensive damage before police arrived.

MINEOLA, NY — A massive fire swept through multiple apartments and businesses in Mineola late Sunday and arson investigators were sent to the scene. The inferno ignited around 8 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Nassau County police and the Mineola Fire Department were alerted to a garage fire in the rear of a building on the 100 block of Main Street. Heavy flames ripped through several businesses and multiple apartments, causing extensive damage before first responders arrived, police said. Video showed orange flames shooting into the night sky and firefighters holding hoses and sending water over European Bronze, which sells decorative sculptures and statues.

About 200 firefighters were sent to the scene as Mineola firefighters were helped by several other departments. Two firefighters were treated and evaluated for exhaustion.
