16-Year-Old Arrested During Foiled Armed Robbery At Metro PCS

Mount Vernon police said the Pelham teen was taken into custody after detectives saw a gunman, wearing a mask, entering the shop.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Pelham teenager has been arrested during a foiled robbery at Metro PCS, according to police.

On Monday, just before 8 p.m., Mount Vernon police saw what appeared to be an armed robbery in progress at the Metro PCS on East Sandford Boulevard. A 16-year-old boy from Pelham was spotted entering the store and displaying what appeared to be a firearm before proceeding to rob the business, according to MVPD.

Detectives were in the area at the time and saw the suspect enter the store wearing all black clothing and a facial covering. They quickly alerted a robbery-in-progress over the police radio.

Moments later, the suspect exited through a back door and fled toward Garden Avenue, where detectives pursued and apprehended him.

A firearm was recovered from his person at the time of arrest, according to police.

"We extend our appreciation to the Mount Vernon Detective Division and the patrol units whose quick response and coordinated efforts led to this arrest," MVPD brass said in a statement. "Their actions ensured this incident was handled in real time and the suspect was taken into custody."

The suspect stole 11 iPhones, 3 Samsung phones, and 3 Motorola cell phones, valued at more than $5,000. He has been arraigned on charges of robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Because he is a juvenile, the suspect's name will not be released, according to police.
