222,000+ Pounds Of Water Chestnut Removed From Tibbetts Brook Lake

The massive invasive species harvest from hard-to-reach areas of the shoreline was part of an ongoing restoration project.

YONKERS, NY — A restoration project involving the removal of invasive water chestnuts and other damaging plant species from a Westchester lake has seen a massive harvest in recent weeks.

As part of its multi-year Lake Revitalization Project at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, the Westchester Parks Foundation announced that 222,246 pounds of water chestnut and other invasive species were pulled from the 10-acre lake over the past month.

Volunteers worked alongside two Truxor Multifunction Amphibious Workhorse machines to help control weeds in hard-to-reach areas.

The project first kicked off in July of 2018 and is part of planned efforts to sustain the lake over the course of the next few years and restore it to its original condition for recreational use.

Over 14 acres of water chestnut have been removed by the machines and another 82,078 pounds by hand since the project first started.
