5 Adults, 2 Kids, Including A 7-Year-Old, Evacuated From House Fire

No serious injuries were reported. Displaced families were helped by the Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management & the Red Cross.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Quick action by the Mount Vernon Fire Department helped keep a fraught situation from becoming a tragedy this weekend.

On Saturday, just after 5 p.m., the Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a house fire call on Homestead Avenue. Fire units arrived on the scene minutes later and found the house in flames.

Mount Vernon firefighters made quick work of the blaze. The fire was contained to one alarm and under control by 7:37 p.m.

Five adults and two children, including a 7-year-old, were inside the residence at the time of the fire. Firefighters were able to safely remove the occupants from the home.

No serious injuries were reported.

Mutual aid was provided by New Rochelle, which sent an engine and ladder truck, and Eastchester, which provided an additional ladder truck.

The Mount Vernon Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross assisted in relocating the displaced residents. In collaboration with the Westchester County Department of Social Services, they provided housing accommodations and financial assistance to those affected by the fire.

"Mount Vernon Fire Department leadership has not identified any suspicious activity at this time," MVFD officials said in a statement. "The Fire Investigation Unit is being briefed and will continue the investigation."

Fire officials said that this weekend's dangerous house fire should serve a a reminder to homeowners to take precautions before disaster strikes.

"The Mount Vernon Fire Department highly encourages the use of working smoke alarms in every livable room of your home," fire officials said. "Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms can provide early warnings, helping to save lives and minimize damage in the event of a fire."

The Mount Vernon Fire Department thanked the mutual aid units for their quick assistance, and expressed gratitude to neighbors for their cooperation during the emergency.
