City Worker Injured In Tree-Trimming Accident Has Died In 'Devastating Loss'
The experienced arborist and horticulturist worked at the New York Botanical Gardens for decades before joining the City of Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A city worker who was seriously injured in an accident this week has died, according to city officials.
"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the city of Mount Vernon announces the passing of one of our own, Mr. Juan Peralta Sr., a dedicated employee of the Department of Public Works, who was seriously injured Tuesday while performing his duties as a tree trimmer near the intersection of 5th Avenue and 5th Street," the city said in a statement released on Friday. "Despite undergoing emergency surgery and receiving critical medical care, Mr. Peralta tragically succumbed to his injuries this afternoon."
Peralta had more than a half-century of experience working as an arborist and horticulturist. Prior to joining the City of Mount Vernon, he worked for Alpine Tree Service for 35 years and at the New York Botanical Gardens for 20 years.

He worked for the city for more than a decade, starting as a part-time hourly laborer.
"This is a devastating loss for the Mount Vernon team, the Peralta family, and our community," Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard said. "His work ethic and passion for this work, his family, and this community were exceptional. He will be sorely missed."
